Город на востоке штата Вашингтон. Расположен на р. Спокан [Spokane River] у границы со штатом Айдахо. 195,6 тыс. жителей (2000), второй по величине город штата. Промышленный центр: выплавка алюминия (заводы корпорации "Кайзер алюминум энд кемикл" [Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp.]); производство пластмассы, электрооборудования; радиоэлектроника, деревообработка. ГЭС Гранд-Кули [ Grand Coulee Dam]. Торгово-финансовый центр т.н. "Внутренней империи" [Inner Empire] - сельскохозяйственных районов восточной части штата Вашингтон, северной части Айдахо и западной части Монтаны. База ВВС США Фэрчайлд [Fairchild AFB]. Два университета, в том числе Университет Гонзага [Gonzaga University]; симфонический оркестр, опера, театры. Впервые район исследован экспедицией Льюиса и Кларка [ Lewis and Clark Expedition]. Город основан в 1872 "отцом Спокана" [Father of Spokane] Дж. Гловером [Glover, James], статус города с 1881. До 1890 назывался Спокейн-Фоллс [Spokane Falls]. Название происходит от индейского племени спокан [ Spokan]. В 1974 здесь проходила Всемирная выставка "Эскпо-74" [World's Fair, Expo '74]. Город окружен многочисленными озерами (более 70). В пригороде горнолыжные курорты. Среди достопримечательностей комплекс выставки 1974 "Риверпарк-центр" [Riverpark Center] и несколько музеев, в том числе Музей Исторического общества восточного Вашингтона [Eastern Washington State Historical Society] с известной коллекцией произведений индейского искусства -
